The Birth of St John

THE BIRTH OF ST JOHN “Now Elizabeth’s full time of being delivered was come, and she brought forth a son. And her neighbours and kinsfolks heard that the Lord had showed His great mercy towards her, and they congratulated with her. And it came to pass that on the eighth day they came to circumcize the child, and they called him by his father’s name, Zachary. And his mother, answering,... Read More

THE MAGNIFICAT: Part III of IV “He hath showed might in His arm; He hath scattered the proud in the conceit of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat and hath exalted the humble. He hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich He hath sent empty away.” Luke 1:51-53 1. Here more than ever does one hear in Mary’s words an echo of the Old Testament. She seems again... Read More

THE MAGNIFICAT:  Part IV of IV “He hath received Israel His servant, being mindful of His mercy. As He spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his seed for ever.’ And Mary abode with her about three months, and she returned to her own house.” Luke 1:54-56 1. At the close of the canticle Mary again very emphatically reveals to us the material source of all her inspiration. She has always... Read More

THE MAGNIFICAT (Part I of IV) “And Mary said: ‘My soul doth magnify the Lord. And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.” Luke 1:46-47 1. Here more than anywhere else are we able to detect the soul of Our Lady; here we have her authentic biography, coming spontaneously, almost unconsciously from her lips, and in the language with which her lips are most familiar. Secondly, this... Read More

THE MAGNIFICAT (Part II of IV) “Because He hath regarded the humility of His handmaid, for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For He that is mighty hath done great things to me, and holy is His name. And His mercy is from generation unto generation to them that fear him.” Luke 1:48-50 1. By “humility” the original Greek here intends not the virtue of humility,... Read More

THE VISITATION “And Mary, rising up in those days, went into the hill country with haste into a city of Judah. And she entered into the house of Zachary, and saluted Elizabeth. And it came to pass that when Elizabeth heard the salutation of Mary the infant leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost, and she cried out with a loud voice and said, Blessed art thou among women,... Read More

Seeking God in Love

Divine Intimacy_K2

Seeking God in Love Presence of God – Help me, O God, to concentrate all my affections on You, so that my heart will be satisfied with You alone. MEDITATION Faith “is like the feet wherewith the soul journeys to God, and love is the guide that directs it” (John of the Cross, Spiritual Canticle, 1,11). Charity follows faith; in this life, faith and charity, as it were, go at an equal pace: the... Read More

MARY ALONE “And the Angel departed from her.” Luke 1:38 1. There can be few more beautiful or more fruitful matters for contemplation than the sight and the thoughts of Mary after the Angel had “departed from her.” If there is “joy before the angels of God upon one sinner that doth penance,” what must have been the joy in heaven when the “fiat” of Mary had been spoken, and... Read More

THE FIAT OF MARY “And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord, be it done to me according to thy word. And the Angel departed from her.” Luke 1:38 1. The Angel had spoken three times. First he had showed the deepest reverence for Mary; and to this she had answered nothing, but, disturbed in mind, had pondered much and waited. Then he had announced to her the great message with which he had been... Read More

THE WORK OF THE HOLY GHOST “And Mary said to the Angel, How shall this be done, because I know not man? And the Angel answering said to her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Most High shall overshadow thee.
