How Often Should Married Couples Have Sex? | Catholic Teaching
It’s one of the most common questions — and one that many couples are afraid to ask. . The Catholic Church teaches that sex in marriage isn’t just allowed — it’s good, holy, and sacramental when done in a state of grace.
💡 The marital act is:
Unitive: It makes the two become one, bonding husband and wife more deeply.
Procreative: It is open to the gift of life, cooperating with God’s creative power.
It’s not just for babies. It’s not just for pleasure. It’s a God-given gift that draws you closer — to each other and to Him.
As Father Lambert famously said:
“In marriage, there should be sex — and lots of it!”
…but only as a mutual gift of self, in a state of grace, and in service to the other.
This is why the enemy attacks marital intimacy — through pornography, lust, and cultural distortions — because he wants to destroy the unity and grace that flow from a holy marriage.
