Announcing our Next Book!

Spiritual Direction and the Journey to God

I am excited to announce that our next book was written by our own Dan Burke. As his passion for spiritual direction and its relevance for today’s Catholic inspired this blog, it was also the spark that impelled him to write a comprehensive guide on the subject.

the-good-portion-pictureFor many of us, the notion of obtaining a spiritual director is an attractive, yet daunting concept. I have no doubt that reading this book will remove the mystery and help us to take great strides in preparing our souls for eternity.

The following is taken from the back of the book:

Spiritual Direction is…

  • Understanding the general direction or trajectory of ones soul.
  • Working with a spiritual guide to help unite one’s soul to God and find peace and joy through the pursuit of His will and ways .
  • A process of growing in holiness.

Covering each of these important pathways to peace and holiness, this book will serve the souls of those who are seeking to deepen their relationship with God and find their spiritual direction. Whether you are at the beginning of the process, a veteran of spiritual direction, or struggling outside of spiritual direction, this book will help you uncover a map of success for your journey.

If you would like to learn more, here’s a video of Dan’s appearance on EWTN’s Bookmark and this one is a trailer provided by his publisher.

With this book, we’re pleased to be including a series of webinars with the book’s author (scheduled times to be posted soon).  We plan to begin reading on March 11, and should spend approximately five weeks on Navigating the Interior Life – Please join us!

About Vicki Burbach

Vicki Burbach is a wife and homeschooling mother of six children ages three to fifteen years who relishes the calm inspiration of spiritual reading amidst the roller coaster of life. A passionate convert to the Faith, Vicki is an avid reader who started the CSD book club so she could embark with likeminded bibliophiles on a spiritual journey through some of the greatest Catholic books ever written. In addition to moderating the book club and managing family activities, Vicki also cooks, does laundry, cleans, does laundry, and, every once in a while, finds time to write and speak on topics such as marriage and spiritual reading - of course, these endeavors take place only between her many loads of laundry.

Thanks Dan. I’m looking forward to having some new insights during the discussion…

  • Robert Kraus

I can’t wait. I have my first appt with my priest tomorrow for spiritual direction. Finally I can get some discipline into my spiritual walk and prayer life. This book will be a great help!

    • Dan Burke

Robert – I will be on a retreat all day today and will pray for a successful meeting for you.

    • LizEst

So glad to hear it Robert.  I will pray for you as well.

    • Becky Ward

  • CatholicKath

    • Daniel Burke

I am grateful to hear that you are in spiritual direction and that it is working out so well. God is good!

  • Thomas Smith

I’m starting up SD again this month and gave the book to my director as a gift. We will read through it together. I’m hoping to read thru once b/f the book club begins. Thanks for doing this!

    • Dan Burke

Thomas – sounds interesting. Let me know what he thinks.

      • Thomas Smith

Thanks, Dan. He is a she ; ) Mother Rosa Mesa, FSE

  • quiltbugjj

Sitting on my bedside table – read the first chapter.  I’m really looking forward to this!

    • Dan Burke

      So am I!

  • MariaGo

Lent the book to a friend. She was excited when she started reading it! And she was really happy to read about the stages in the Spiritual Life and the questions on root sin. We were glad to find out that we were more or less in the same stage! :)
Hope to get it back in time! Wish this were more readily available here. It’ll take 2-3 moths to arrive if she ordered now. Wish we could both follow the book club!

    • Dan Burke

      Are you in the Philippines?

      • MariaGo

Yup! Ordering from amazon or other sites normally takes a while to arrive here…having stuff sea-shipped by box than by item costs less…

        • Dan Burke

Wow – maybe we should find a volunteer to translate for local sales?

          • MariaGo

No need to tanslate most Filipinos speak good English. It would be great if you sold here! If you want to sell here, the top two religious stores here are St Paul’s and Tanging Yaman (True Treasure) by the Jesuits. :D will see if I can find contact info…

          • Dan Burke

            That would be great!

Dear Vickie: I am a returning participate in CSD. A prolonged  (2months+) period of bad health interrupted my spiritual journey and now I am recovered, thanks be to God. My e-mail address has changed, so please note my new address is: Thank you and may God bless you in your work. Donald True

    • Dan Burke

Glad to have you back Fr. True. Do you receive the regular site updates to your current email or do we need to change it?

      • djt37

Dear Dan: I don’t receive regular site updates, so please change my email address to: Thank you and God bless you, it is so good to be back in touch with you. FYI: I resigned my orders as an Anglican priest in November 2012 and am now in RCIA program. I participated in the Rite of Election on Sunday, February 10, 2013 and expect to be received into the Catholic Church on Easter Day 2013. Much of my ‘journey home’ is because of the guidance I’ve received from your web site. Thank you and God bless you. Donald True.

  • Plevesque

I’m glad you are doing this. I’ve read most of the book but still am having a hard time finding a spiritual director/confessor (I would really like to have both, maybe too much to ask). It would be good to see how you all understand the different chapters. It’s kind of like a personal on-line retreat for lent thank-you.

    • Dan Burke

I am looking forward to it as well.

  • Tessin Parker

I was wondering if this book club is open to non-Catholics (I am considering converting) and if this book would be appropriate for beginners.  If so, how do I join up?

    • Dan Burke

Dear Tessin – Welcome! The book club is open to anyone who desires to learn about faithful Catholic spirituality – that is, spirituality that is in keeping with the teachings of Christ’s Church. If this interests you and you are considering conversion, you are more than welcome. I think that this study might be particularly helpful to you. Although the first part about spiritual direction might not be as applicable, the latter part about how to grow in the spiritual life should be very beneficial to you. As well, we will provide several webinars in this study where you will be able to ask questions and get answers in real-time interaction. We are glad to have you join us!

    • LizEst

Welcome Tessin!  We would love to have you join us.  To join, go to this link and follow the instructions:

Also, since we are just about done with the current book, I recommend you purchase the next book (the one you asked about), which is Dan’s book “Navigating the Interior Life.”  That way, you can follow along with the comments, recommendations, etc…and, you’ll be able to ask questions that pertain to the subject as well.

We look forward to your participation and the insights you can provide as well.

      God bless you, Tessin.

    • Vicki

      Absolutely – welcome!  I’m a convert myself.

  • bernadetteP

I used to have a spiritual director when I lived in Virginia..bu since I moved to Connecticut, there is no one willing to do this. I am a professed Secular Carmelite and in need of spiritual direction. My community is in Virginia and I am a remote member since there is only one small community a distance away in Ct.  I look forward to this opportunitie.

    • Dan Burke

Dear Bernadette – we are looking forward to engaging with you!

  • Mary G

I have this book and have not read it yet…now is the time. I am looking forward to this book club!

    • Dan Burke

  • Alesita Div

How can I get the book in spanish? Or it doesn’t care if it is in english, which I would prefered to be in spanish, but how can I get the book in Guadalajara, México?

    • Dan Burke

I recently purchased Dan’s book and look forward to reading and discussing it with the group. Thank you for selecting this title, and what a gift that Dan will be presenting webinars for us!

As usual, I am coming, oh so late on this Post.  I was not able to keep up with the “Imitation of Christ” but may God help me to participate fully in this wonderful Book by Dan.  I am sending this Post to my Five Eucharistic Apostles of the Divine Mercy to whom I gave a copy of the Book.  Dan so graciously sent me my own Copy and Five more to share with my Friends.
God bless you, Dan and your loved ones and the entire Team of RCSD and “The Family”

  • NonnaBAC
